How Not To Cry At Work

Last year, we brought you news of the release of New Girl on the Job: Advice from the Trenches, a career guide by our own blogger and journalist, Hannah Seligson.  We are pleased to announce that New Girl is still on the job and was just released in paperback. While Seligson really wanted to call the book, How Not to Cry at Work, that hasn’t stood in the way of rave reviews.

New Girl on the Job has been called “a must-read for every woman entering the work world” by the Houston Business Journal and the Washington Post said that it “covers the key things any young woman needs to know to thrive at those first couple of jobs.”

The book synthesizes interviews with over a hundred women ranging from recent graduates to seasoned professionals at the top of their fields.  Notable interviewees include Bobbi Brown, CEO of Bobbi Brown Cosmetics, Judy Woodruff, a senior correspondent at PBS, and Jill Herzig, the executive editor of Glamour magazine. Through these interviews, Seligson creates a new vernacular with which to discuss the social challenges of office life.

Topics include how to avoid becoming a doormat, what to do if you are “assistant-tized” (forced to shoulder all the administrative tasks), how to negotiate a fair salary, how to avoid becoming a work martyr, what to do if all the guys are getting the plum assignments, and the in-and-outs of office politics.

In other words, it arms you with the information you need to fight your way out of the trenches and stay out of that last bathroom stall.
