I know I write for the Beauty section here at Daily Cents, which includes mainly topics such as skincare, hair care, cosmetics, and the like.  But with the Olympics approaching, I need to pause so we can talk about my girl: gymnast, Alicia Sacramone.  I love this girl.  After a disappointing miss at making the squad in 2004 she took some time off to reevaluate her decisions, and in the end she dusted off her balance beam and got back on.  And I just can’t think of anything more beautiful than a woman who knows how to pick herself up after a fall.

A seven-time world medalist, Sacramone is a mature 20 years-old in comparison to many of her teenage competitors. I think she has the experience and insight that her younger teammates may not, only for sake of age.  And with the body of a woman (ok, a professionally trained athlete woman), Sacramone maintains her amazingly fit physique in spite of her years.   Another reason I applaud Sacramone is because, even in the midst of competing around the world, she still went to college.  She took a year off from Brown University to train for the Olympics, but with every intention of returning.  According to Wikipedia, Sacramone is the first female American gymnast since Kelly Garrison to “combine full-time university studies and NCAA competition with elite gymnastics.”  This girl has heart and knows dedication on a first name basis.  My number one girl crush used to be on fitness model turned American Gladiator, Monica Carlson (or Jet, if you will), but I’m afraid Sacramone has booted Carlson to second place.  After the Olympic trials a few weeks ago, Sacromone is Bejing bound and I couldn’t be more thrilled.  Don’t get me wrong.  I’m loving the firecracker that is Shawn Johnson as well, but I’m behind Sacramone all the way.

While skimming the Women’s Health Magazine website, I came across this page on Sacromone (and other Olympic hopefuls), including a few of her gym routines (I tried the Pike Up with the Ball move...not an easy one), playlist, and an inspirational Q&A by Amy Van Deusen.  Beauty at its best, Sacramone appears to be positive, down to earth, and in my opinion, a real badass.  I’m rooting for you, girl!
