I may have spent my Memorial Day in Nantucket this year, but that doesn’t mean I can’t represent my fine home-state of Mississippi while I’m away. Growing up in Jackson, I was exposed to many things indigenous to the South- fried food, fine people, and Amy Head Cosmetics. Amy has supplied me with makeup advice and amazing skincare since I was a teenager. While I’ve known Amy for a long time, I sat down with her during my last visit to Jackson to pick her brain about ambition, inspiration, and how to look your best, even without wearing an ounce of makeup.
It amazes me to be with Amy, as she still has the energy and enthusiasm as she must have had when she first launched her company, maybe even more. Not to mention she still has the skin of a twenty-one-year-old. Tall, thin, and representing everything she stands for, Amy believes in skincare first (my kind of girl!). A former model and commercial makeup artist, she opened Amy Head Studio and Amy Head Cosmetics in 1987. She wanted to stay in Mississippi to be close to her family and because she understood the needs of the Southern woman. Never interested in becoming a celebrity makeup artist, Amy’s passion always lied in helping the “everyday” woman find her best look. One reason I love Amy so much is because she still has the light in her eyes. With modesty and grace, she has managed to maintain her sweet, southern charm in spite of her flourishing success. In 2004 Amy expanded her boutique line into Mountain Brook in Birmingham, Alabama. In 2006 Amy opened another shop in Kansas, Missouri and her products are also available at The Alluvian Spa in Greenwood, Mississippi and Reeds Department Store in Tupelo. But don’t be discouraged, the rest of you United-Statesers, you can purchase Amy Head cosmetics online, too.
I have a ton of my own favorite Amy products, but I’ll focus on a few different items that have come out just in time for summer- I couldn’t stay away from them this Memorial Day weekend. A good summer look is all about keeping your face as natural as possible. But some women will feel more comfortable with more coverage, so these three products make it easy to accentuate any face for a soft, summery look.
Amy makes a great gloss called Mint Kiss. A sheer coral gloss, Mint Kiss can be worn over color, but I prefer it on its own. It looks clean and encourages kissing with an awesome hint of mint (who doesn’t love kissing?). Overall it makes for a great color-kissed pout on a sun-kissed face. And for a sun-kissed face, her Gold Dust blush looks great on the apples of the cheeks. It’s not a bronzer, but it helps to brighten the cheekbones; just sweep it across the apples of your cheeks and back for a nice sheen. Amy recommends wearing it alone or paired with an apricot or pink colored blush. Because the color is so warm and looks great on tan skin, I also think it will look nice on women of color. Now, if we are going for natural, eye color is something you definitely don’t want to over-do during the summer, especially during the day. All weekend I used her Gleaming eye shadow at night, just for a little sparkle. It’s a shimmery peach shade that I prefer to use alone on the lid, but would look just a nice paired with browns or grays for a more dramatic look.
Amy also sells a few other brands in her studio besides her own, my favorite being Bonnie Holmes. As a beauty writer, I’m fortunate enough to try all kinds of different skincare, fall in love with something, and then fall in love with something else. One product that I have yet to stop loving (and will continue til death do us part) is Bonnie Holmes Sheer Skin Moisturizer with Grapeseed. I live for this stuff. It can be difficult to love more than one night cream, as I have to alternate between Bonnie Holmes and my MLab, but I can think of worse problems to have. Bonnie Holmes also makes a fantastic Body Oil which Amy recommends using twice a week, a Body Crème, and a sunblock that is a Number One best seller at Amy Head Studio. Great for sensitive skin and everyday use, it contains an SPF 25 and jojoba oil.
Phew! That’s a lot to digest, but I couldn’t let you go through the summer without exposing the jewel that is Amy Head Cosmetics. If you’re in the Jackson area, or any other Amy Head boutique location, pop in and check it out. She keeps an amazing staff and a wonderland of products. If you get a chance to meet Amy you’ll be blown away by her knowledge and passion, and I’m pretty sure you won’t leave empty-handed.
