30 examples of sexism in the media

The Women's Media Center, an organization that strives to make women more visible in the media, has made an incredible montage highlighting sexism in the media, drawing on clips from major networks, such as MSNBC, Fox, CNN, and NBC,. The video and commentary after the jump.

Here's the video. Spoiler alert: there is rampant sexism in the media. I'll start with the biggest repeat offender MSNBC's Chris Matthews who just can't seem to commenting on how Hillary looks. Really, it's somewhat pathological.  After a debate performance, it's business as usual with a comment about how her hair looked. I'm easing you in here -- it gets worse.  Matthews masters the seemingly impossible and basically sexually harasses star CNBC reporter Erin Burnett through a split screen.

Fox has some precious moments with their guests.  One woman talks about how "haggard" Hillary looks, comparing her to a 92-year-old, noting she'll scare away independent voters with that look of experience.

In another tasteful bit, another Fox guest says, "When Hillary Clinton speaks men hear take our the garbage." We here Nancy Pelosi, the first female speaker of the House, called the wicked of the west.  There's talk of Hillary's PMS and mood swings.  No wonder the United States is ranked 68th in the world for number of women in elected office.

Good but Sloppy

While this article's subject is important and interesting, it seems to have been rushed to publication without final proofing and editing. This is unfortunate, because the typos, dropped words and misspellings negatively affect the credibility of what otherwise is a good article.

Yes I agree it is a sexist media. Who cares about spelling errors, its the point of the article. And the point is made! Thanks.
Sloppy doesn't cut it

First and foremost, the media is just reinforcing that we are a sexist nation first, then a racist one. Yes, it's a good piece, and the bashing was something I'd noticed every time HC or NP or any other woman politician is on the television, but the typos just don't cut it. What kind of responsible journalist doesn't proof before hitting 'send'?
FYI, Sam, you should have said 'it is the point...'

Sexism? Really? Are You Kidding Me?
written by Taylor D., January 07, 2009
I don't notice any sexism in the media. Last time i checked, there are as many female reporters as males. Also, i don't know if a guy stating his opinion of a female's looks is considered sexist, no offense but i don't think you're going to hear a guy in the media rate how another guy looks. And there's a part in your story where you say, "One woman talks about how "haggard" Hillary looks, comparing her to a 92-year-old." Well, seriously you're trying to sell the whole sexist bit, but using one woman dising another doesn't get your point accross, in fact, it sells the other, that men and women are both bagging on Hillary Clinton, not just men, which makes me feel like reading this was a huge waste of time...THANKS from your friendly male friend, Taylor!

give me examples of sexism
Where?

Totally agree with Taylor D, surely sexism is effectively discrimination between genders, so if one woman criticises her looks that surely cannot be sexist? I think not only spell checks, but some more research was needed for this piece.

yeah, i really dont think commenting on her hair constitutes sexism. isnt it possible he is critical of her as a politician?
What do you mean there is no sexism
written by Hibat, May 03, 2009
ARE U KIDDING ME??? if someone want to criticise 'her as a politician' then maybe they should criticise her ideas rather than the way she looks or talks. and just because there are more women reporters than men, it doesn't mean there isn't sexism going on in the media. whatever men are in the media, they throw in enough sexist comments to make up for the missing men. come on, if you can't see that there isn't sexism, then you must be blind, or you must be sexist yourself, no offense.

I agree with Taylor D, and I think sexism is made up. Woman are better cooks, and men are built to work and be stronger. Get over it.

to be honest i do slightly agree with taylor d, but jane ^ you just made a bit of a contridiction because taylor is saying that sexism in the media does not exist and then you have agreed and said women are better cooks and men are stronger, which is an unfair comment. thanks
