I came across a great site that has taken on the challenge of teaching today's youth about the importance of voting. The children’s virtual social site, a national non-profit organization called Woogi World™, is taking aim at adult apathy regarding the electoral process with their "Every Kid Votes" campaign that is designed to teach 2.5 million grade-schoolers the importance of participating in the voting process. Elementary children nationwide have the opportunity to learn about the right and responsibility of voting in America. Upon completion of this adventure, children will have earned the privilege to cast their ballot for either Senators Barack Obama or John McCain, with results of this vote aired in the national media.
“We want today’s children to believe they can make a difference. It’s like Thomas Jefferson said, ‘We do not have government by the majority, we have government by the majority who participate,’” said Scott Dow, Founder and CEO of Children’s Way. “With enough experiences such as “Every Kid Votes”, kids could grow up not just understanding America’s freedoms; they’d be ready and willing to protect them!” Woogi World’s “Every Kid Votes” program teaches the importance of being an informed citizen and the responsibilities of voting to sustain democracy. Students learn about the voting process and civic responsibility, and in turn they more likely become adults who will take an active role in the democratic process. Between now and one week before the 2008 Presidential election, children will be given the opportunity to: · View dozens of videos · Share their comments · Debate issues · Communicate with politicians and other children · Earn the right to be heard! · With your help, have their thoughts heard nationally There is also an academic classroom supplement, “Studies Weekly” with 55,000 teachers nationwide who are participating. Here's a staggering statistic: Of the 172 countries that allow voting, the United States ranks 139 in terms of voter turn-out – only 47% of all eligible, registered American voters actually take the time to vote. Let's start young and make sure our kids know what it means to vote and why it is so important to excercise that right.
